The twenty-third section, on distraction: when śamatha and vipaśyanā are present, there are five distracted mental factors. (1) Distraction of attention (manaskāra): that is, bodhisattvas abandoning the Mahāyāna and following attention within the two vehicles. (2) External distraction: discursive thought with respect to the external five desires takes discursive thought as its essence among the secondary defilements, and indulging the mind to scatter over external objects takes the distracted primary mind (citta) [as its essence]. (3) Internal mental distraction: that is, a person who has already separated from desire gives rise to savoring attachment toward meditative absorption due to torpor and so forth—this is called internal distraction. (4) Distraction of marks: that is, with respect to the images appearing within internal meditative absorption, directing the mind to reflect and cling to internal meditation or external apprehended forms and characteristics—this is called distraction of marks. (5) Distraction of heavy dullness: that is, taking the joy and pleasure within meditative absorption as 'mine', and taking the body of heavy dullness as 'self' to give rise to pride—this is called distraction of heavy dullness.
