Next below is the sixth, the Viniścaya on the Chapter on Accomplishment. Regarding the ten Dharma-practices: first, copying and upholding the sūtras and teachings; second, making offerings; third, bestowing wisdom on others; fourth, listening; fifth, reciting and studying; sixth, receiving and comprehending; seventh, chanting; eighth, explaining extensively for others; ninth, reflecting in solitary retreat; tenth, entering into the marks of cultivation accordingly. Such ten practices all have the meaning of supporting, so they are called merit. The ninth is the path of preparatory application, which is reflection; the tenth is the path of purifying obscurations, which is cultivation. Tracing the phrasing of this text, only the ninth is called preparatory application, so it may be said that the first eight are exclusively innate wholesomeness.
