Fourth, in the section explaining the portal of abiding: Regarding the statement 'gradually enters the concentration of cessation', if a person liberated through wisdom wishes to enter [nirvāṇa] without remainder, he does not necessarily enter the concentration of cessation. Here, it is said that one first enters the concentration of cessation with reference to one who is doubly liberated. Alternatively, when an arhat is about to enter [nirvāṇa] without remainder, he must enter the concentration of cessation, and without having to emerge from the concentration, he immediately enters [nirvāṇa] without remainder; this means abiding in the eighth consciousness and entering parinirvāṇa, which is different from the Hīnayāna treatises [which hold that] one enters parinirvāṇa abiding in the sixth vipāka-mind, and so forth.
