Second, clarifying their binding according to body or speech: according to the Hīnayāna, the three—name, phrase, and phoneme—are bound to five stages according to the body, and to two stages according to speech. According to the exposition of the Mahāyāna school, those that are tainted—namely, the names and so forth produced by bodhisattvas before the stages, adherents of the two vehicles, and ordinary beings—are invariably bound to two stages according to speech, because they are conventionally posited on the basis of sound. This is unlike the Hīnayāna, where there are distinct real entities of name and so forth apart from sound; therefore, one cannot say that they are bound to five stages according to the body. If they are the names and so forth produced by great bodhisattvas and the Buddhas, Tathāgatas, they are simply unbound.
