As for 'phrase' (*pada*): because it encompasses names to completion and clearly reveals meanings that are not directly observed, it is called 'phrase.' As for 'phoneme' (*vyañjana*): it has the sense of 'clear revelation'; because phonemes cause those names and phrases to call forth all phenomena distinctly and clearly, and because they are the basis on which names and phrases rely, they are also called 'syllables' (*akṣara*). That which cannot be altered or transformed is called a 'syllable'; that which can be altered or transformed is a 'name,' because it changes in various ways in accordance with what is expressed.
