Fourth, explaining the meaning of mental application and so forth: within this there are five gates; here it mentions mental application and takes in the remaining four by "and so forth", hence it says "and so forth". One should know that in the new translations of sūtras and treatises, whenever the character deng [and so forth] is placed, it refers outward, unlike the old translations of sūtras and treatises where it might refer outward or inward: first, explaining the seven mental applications; second, explaining the ten knowledges; third, explaining the six consciousnesses; fourth, explaining the nine thorough knowledges; fifth, explaining the three gates of liberation. As for "herein" up to "one should contemplate all dharmas": this corresponds to consciousness, knowledge, and the latencies in the Abhidharma. They should be mastered through three gates: if asking about consciousness knowing, it should be mastered through the eight gates; if asking about knowledge knowing, it should be mastered through the gate of truths; if asking about thorough comprehending, it should be mastered through the gate of categories.
