The phrase "causing [them] to abandon desires: rebuking the six kinds of black factors, all conditioned phenomena, and so forth": as the thirtieth fascicle says: "What is called investigating that factor? It means reflecting thus: 'If I do not know truly the impure nature of phenomena regarding those pure visible forms, and give rise to lustful desire toward those internal and external pure visible forms, I will be subsumed under the inverted and the black factors; they are phenomena with dispute, with suffering, with harm, with disasters, and with all-consuming burning afflictions. Due to this cause and condition, there will arise in the future birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, dejection, suffering, and various disturbances. If I contemplate truly the impure nature of phenomena regarding those pure visible forms, I will be subsumed under the non-inverted and the white factors; they are phenomena without dispute, without suffering, without harm,' and so on at length, up to 'due to this cause and condition, one is able to extinguish future birth, old age, sickness, death,' and so on up to 'disturbances.'" The explanation states: first, phenomena with dispute; second, with suffering; third, with harm; fourth, with disasters; fifth, with all-consuming burning afflictions; sixth, due to this cause and condition, giving rise to future [birth] and so on up to various disturbances—these are the six kinds of black factors.
