23. Explaining the difference in the three names of giving and so forth cultivated across the three asaṃkhyeya kalpas. During the first asaṃkhyeya kalpa, when practicing giving and so forth, defilements still operate. Being unable to subdue them, one is rather subdued by them, which means that giving and so forth are subdued and degraded by defilements. Regarding 'in the stage of practice of resolute intention and so forth': pointing out its rank and stage. 'When resolute intention shifts in warmth, this is called pāramitā': that which is cultivated before the stages has not yet attained the superior grade, but is only the grade of warmth or medium grade, and is simply called pāramitā. 'Again, across immeasurable time… up to… from the first stage and above': pointing out its rank and stage. 'This is called proximate pāramitā': so called because of proximity to bodhi. 'Again, across… up to… the eighth stage and above': pointing out its rank and stage. 'This is called great pāramitā': from the eighth stage and above, practice is effortless, and within each individual practice limitless practices arise, hence it attains the designation 'great'.
