Tai says: 'The defilements of the path of seeing are generated by conceptual attention and do not spontaneously arise as soon as one is born; thus they are named non-co-arising active defilements. The defilements of the path of cultivation arise spontaneously, like innate goodness; these are co-arising defilements. This is an explanation of the terms. The meaning is the same as Master Jing's. In the sixth stage, one attains markless contemplation, and because prajñā arises, [afflictions] gradually become subtle, so they are called [occurrences] arisen from debilitated dormant defilements; only when subdued by the path of cultivation do they cease to be active. In the eighth stage and above, all defilements no longer become active; that is, the cognitive hindrance of the seventh [consciousness's] clinging to dharmas serves as the basis, and the active occurrence of the six consciousnesses' clinging to dharmas is arisen solely from the subtle dormant defilement of clinging to dharmas.'
