Among the nine matters: First, the matter of designating sentient beings: namely, the five aggregates. Second, their enjoyment: namely, the twelve sense bases, wherein the six faculties and six dust-objects mutually enjoy one another. Third, their arising: namely, the twelve links of existence. Fourth, their abiding after having arisen: namely, the four nutriments. Fifth, the matter of defilement and purification: namely, the four truths—suffering and origination are defilement, cessation and the path are purification. Sixth, the matter of their distinctions: namely, the five realms—the realm of sentient beings, the container world, the Dharma realm, the realm of disciplined sentient beings, and the realm of the means of discipline. Seventh, the matter of the expositor: namely, the Buddhas. Eighth, the matter of what is expounded: namely, the teachings. Ninth, the matter of assemblies: there are eight assemblies, of which four assemblies are among humans—namely, kṣatriyas, śramaṇas, brāhmaṇas, and householders—and four assemblies are among devas: 1. the Heaven of the Four Heavenly Kings; 2. the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven; 3. the Yāma Heaven; 4. the Brahmakāyika Heaven.
