21.73

云何四事？一、聽聞事，聞思二慧；二、歸趣事，則三歸依；三、修學事者，則是三學；四、菩提事者，則是三十七品，四種行跡，奢摩他毘鉢舍那等，能得大菩提事故。顯揚中亦明此四，故彼頌云：聞依學菩提。

What are the four matters? First, the matter of hearing: the two wisdoms of hearing and reflection. Second, the matter of going for refuge: namely, the three refuges. Third, the matter of training and learning: namely, the three trainings. Fourth, the matter of bodhi: namely, the thirty-seven factors [of enlightenment], the four modes of practice, śamatha, vipaśyanā, and so forth, because they are able to attain the matter of great bodhi. The Prakaraṇāryavācā also explains these four; hence its verse states: 'Hearing, refuge, training, bodhi.'
