Fourth, it explains the seven factors of awakening on the path of seeing, specifically explaining the factor of awakening that is investigation of phenomena. The phrase 'investigation' refers to universally taking the categories of all painful phenomena as the noble truth of suffering, meaning universally focusing on suffering. 'Utmost investigation' up to 'the suffering of old age, etc.' refers to distinctively taking the various sufferings. 'Utmost investigation of phenomena' up to 'what was previously cultivated and accomplished' refers to investigating the expressive teaching of the sūtras, relying on which what was previously cultivated was accomplished. The phrase 'accurately determining and so forth to comprehend' refers to comprehending all phenomena equally; hence it is called 'accurately determining.' 'Proximately comprehending' means realizing and drawing close to the aforementioned phenomena to obtain certainty; hence it is called 'proximately comprehending.' The former is the path of seeking, which corresponds to the first three thorough investigations; the present is the path of determination, which corresponds to the latter three instances of authentic knowledge. This clarifies the distinction between the two successive explanations; 'comprehension' is still the factor of awakening that is investigation of phenomena.
