'Regarding the third characteristic, there is ultimate culmination, because all activities of conditioned action are completely severed'—this is the complete exhaustion of severed karma. 'There is ultimate stainlessness, because all afflictions are ultimately severed'—this is the complete exhaustion of severed afflictions. These two are severing, which corresponds to the earlier statement 'attaining ultimate severing'. 'There is the ultimate holy life' means fully cultivating the path, which corresponds to the earlier statement 'and knowledge'. Regarding the fourth characteristic: 'like in the world having five kinds of characteristics, etc.', it brings up a simile to illustrate the Dharma. Master Tai says: 'Because there is no expectation toward others, it is not desired by oneself or by others; having subdued Māra, it is therefore called the falling of the banner.' Explaining the fifth characteristic, one can understand it by examining the text.
