The fifth pair clarifies the three kinds of persons who have not yet entered or have entered the sacred teaching. First, the ordinary person who has not entered the sacred teaching is known by three aspects: 1. ceasing and not arising: this person had already attained right view; next, hearing false teachings, false view was about to arise and right view was about to cease; later, hearing the correct teaching, the false view about to arise does not arise, which is called severed, and the right view having been accomplished previously is not called arising; next is arising and not ceasing: this middling person was formerly neither false nor correct, but later hearing the correct Dharma gives rise to right view, which is called arising, and since the loss of false view does not operate, it is not called severed; next is both arising and ceasing: this person formerly practiced false views, but by hearing the correct Dharma suppresses and eliminates false views and gives rise to right view.
