Question: Below the third dhyāna, is there equanimous feeling as retribution or not? Explanation: Ālaya[-vijñāna] as equanimity exists completely in all five destinies; the six consciousnesses are indeterminate. Two masters of the Western lands differ: One says: below the third dhyāna, the mental consciousness has no retribution of equanimous feeling; this receiving of life and terminating of life consists solely in equanimous feeling; based on the ālaya receiving life and terminating life, at that time the mental consciousness cannot exist. If one follows this interpretation, it accords with this text: only from the fourth dhyāna upward is there the retribution of equanimous feeling in the mental consciousness. The second master says: when the treatises debate whether it exists or not below the third dhyāna, they debate the existence or non-existence of equanimous retribution in the mental consciousness, not the ālaya. If for the sake of this meaning, the mental consciousness of the lower stages also has equanimous retribution, terminating life and receiving life. This contradicts the present text, so we now reconcile them: it is said merely in terms of the three feelings distinguishing the stages, which is why it is said that the lower stages have their equanimous feeling. In principle, both wholesome and unwholesome [karma] can obtain equanimous retribution, down to the termination of life and receiving of life in hell, which also has equanimous feeling induced by unwholesome karma.
