Ninth, explaining the approach encompassed by the word 'etcetera'. Master Jing says: The meaning of the question is that the arising of future existence depends upon two conditions: first, karma; second, craving; yet it only says 'faring in accordance with karma', and does not say 'existence in accordance with craving'. Why is this? The words 'for what reason' below resolve and explain this. First, it clarifies: because craving generates bad karma, one is then born in bad destinies; next, it clarifies that because craving generates good karma, one is then born in good destinies. It is not directly due to craving alone that one obtains birth in the various destinies, hence it only speaks of karma, karma being the proximate cause. Contact associated with hearing and contemplation is generally called 'clear contact'. Master Da says: Regarding 'clear contact', one explanation says it is the mental factor of contact associated with the taintless; another explanation says it is tainted contact that is not ignorance, hence it is called 'clear contact'.
