Answer: The former clarifies the active phase, merely observing ten factors; this clarifies the phase of cessation, comprehensively observing eleven factors. Because one wishes to extinguish the afflictions, karma, and retributions of cyclic existence, and among them ignorance and formative forces are the primary root of cyclic existence, within the phase of cessation all twelve factors are comprehensively observed. Furthermore, within the active phase, one contemplates the twelve factors in reverse; within the phase of cessation, one contemplates the twelve factors in direct progression: due to the cessation of ignorance, formative forces cease, and so forth, up to the cessation of birth causing old age and death to cease; hence it is called "direct and reverse contemplation." Herein there are two aspects: first, explaining the contemplation of the four truths according to tainted right view; second, "furthermore, through right view..." below explains the contemplation of the four truths according to taintless right view. "For this reason..." below generally explains the meanings of the phrases in the sūtra.
