Sixth, explaining subtle wisdom: this means, relative to non-Buddhists, the sequential ability of the noble disciples to know what is subtle is called subtle-inferior. Although non-Buddhists observe that the body abides for a long time, because there are death, birth, discarding, and grasping, they know it is impermanent by nature and develop disgust and revulsion toward desire; yet they do not know moment-to-moment subtle arising and cessation, and by clinging to fixity they generate a self. Even when detaching from the desire of the sphere of nothingness, the view of self still accompanies them, and they are still termed not having attained liberation, because they are unskilled in conditioned arising. Because the noble disciples have already attained skill in conditioned arising, they merely observe the subtle impermanent nature of the four great elements, and have not yet observed that consciousness is impermanent by nature. Below explains the reason for first observing the material body of the four great elements: because the body of the four great elements abides for a long time, like a great mountain, its moment-to-moment impermanence is difficult to know. Therefore, one first observes that the impermanent characteristics of consciousness are coarse and clearly knowable, because it alters and transitions from moment to moment. Although the impermanent nature of consciousness is coarse and apparent, it is nevertheless also called extremely subtle, for its nature is difficult to recognize and only seen by the eye of wisdom. Therefore, when noble disciples wish to awaken to and enter the impermanent nature of consciousness, they first observe the preceding and subsequent states of the five feelings, and next awaken to and enter the impermanent nature of consciousness.
