23.38

前中，謂依中道者，依中道答也。於諸行中問生滅時，不增有情，不減實事者，不增益有真實眾生，是真生滅，以眾生假立無有法體，可辨生滅因緣之法，幻有有生有滅，不得撥言因緣之法，無生無滅成損減也。唯於諸行，安立生滅，不亂而記，自下明離二邊。

Within the former: 'relying on the middle way' means answering by relying on the middle way. Regarding 'when asking about arising and ceasing among conditioned formations, not superimposing sentient beings and not depreciating real phenomena': this means not superimposing that there are real sentient beings who genuinely arise and cease, because sentient beings are conventionally designated and lack real entitative nature; whereas conditioned phenomena that can be distinguished as arising and ceasing through causes and conditions exist illusory-like with arising and ceasing, and one must not repudiate them by saying that conditioned phenomena lack arising and ceasing, which would constitute depreciation. Positing arising and ceasing solely in terms of conditioned formations is answering without confusion; below this it clarifies freedom from the two extremes.
