Regarding "Furthermore, because defiled desire-investigation-contact initially becomes manifest, one experiences the feelings produced by that condition": in the order of the previous three gates, first is desire; second is investigation; third is contact. Among the latter three meanings, first, the power of attachment produces that desire; second, the power of attention produces that investigation; third, the power of the objective field produces that contact. Attached and not abandoning it, continuous over a long time, one does not attain quiescence; this is the first distinction in meaning. From "Furthermore, because those desires and so forth..." downward: because the three conditions are manifest, the afflictions of that category in the practitioner's body have not yet been permanently severed; this is the second distinction in meaning.
