Now, collating with fascicle eleven, it says: In the first dhyāna, joy and pleasure born of detachment are explained; because one realizes and abides in this, five dharmas are eliminated, namely joy induced by desire, sorrow induced by desire, joy induced by the unwholesome, sorrow induced by the unwholesome, and equanimity induced by the unwholesome; furthermore, one's cultivation of five dharmas becomes complete, namely gladness, joy, ease, pleasure, and samādhi. Furthermore, regarding "joy, pleasure, and equanimity in inferior, intermediate, and superior grades, etc.": joy is inferior in the desire [realm], intermediate in the first dhyāna, and superior in the second dhyāna; pleasure is inferior in the desire realm and first dhyāna, intermediate in the second dhyāna, and superior in the third dhyāna; equanimity is inferior in the second dhyāna and below, intermediate in the third dhyāna, and superior in the fourth dhyāna.
