Master Da says: 'The place of relief' refers to the noble ones abiding on the path of seeing. 'The place of momentum' refers to the srotāpanna abiding in the fruit. 'The place of lineage' refers to the noble disciples from the path of provision onward. 'At most seven returns' refers to persons of seven rebirths. From 'Non-Buddhist teachers [...] down to cannot establish the thorough knowledge of right abandonment': this first person does not sever any of the four clingings whatsoever, yet together they propound treatises on the thorough knowledge of abandonment. Second, from 'due to their basic contract' downward, they only sever clinging to sensual desires and do not sever the remaining three. Third, from 'if there are those who with others' downward, clinging to sensual desires has already been severed before, and they further sever and thoroughly know. Fourth, from 'if there are moral disciplines and vows, which are also not of the same share' downward, they sever the former three clingings but have not yet severed clinging to the discourse of self; no external non-Buddhists sever clinging to the discourse of self, because they exhaustively reckon it as a self.
