In the former, it says: 'Because of the predominant power of hearing the correct Dharma, one can quickly gather and realize clear contact accompanied by designations. Therefore, that is spoken of as the arising of contact.' Because hearing the correct Dharma enables one to realize clear contact, hearing the Dharma is spoken of as the arising of contact. Clear contact is taintless contact; it does not actually utter speech, but in explaining clear contact it is called 'accompanied by designations' because it is a remote condition for uttering speech. Furthermore, clear contact pertains to both the tainted and taintless; now, saying 'clear contact accompanied by designations' refers to the tainted. Furthermore, 'due to the permanent exhaustion of all taints, one obtains the ultimate liberation conjoined with the feeling born of clear contact': that is, the nirvāṇa realized at the time of the knowledge of exhaustion is called liberation. In 'This liberation [...] down to because it has an unblemished nature': because it is foremost among the bliss of the tranquility of nirvāṇa. Just below, it says that liberation is steadfast, which is the nirvāṇa-realm with remainder; hence we know that liberation is unconditioned liberation.
