Below, it differentiates training and the fruits of training as capable of realizing the provisions that remedy the eight faults by cultivating and collecting the nine perceptions. The eight faults are: 1. craving and attachment to gain and respect; 2. cherishing and treasuring all formations of subsequent existence; 3. indolence and laziness; 4. the view of individuality (satkāyadṛṣṭi); 5. greed and attachment to delicious flavors; 6. covetous craving toward the worlds; 7. relying on negligence and wrong conduct as expedients; 8. relying on wrong vows to practice the holy life. These eight faults are what is remedied; the nine perceptions are the remedies. Master Jing says: Within the nine perceptions, after each remedies the eight faults, the last two perceptions are difficult to explain, and the śāstra itself analyzes them. Master Da says: The fifth and sixth perceptions together remedy the fifth, greed and attachment to delicious flavors; the remaining seven perceptions each remedy one fault, and the sequence can be known from the beginning.
