Seventh, explaining the gate of cultivation: Master Jing says: explaining the twenty-one notions: 1. the notion of impermanence, 2. the notion of suffering, 3. the notion of non-self, 4. the notion of emptiness, 5. the notion of impurity, 6. the notion of revulsion toward food, 7. the notion of the world being unpleasurable, 8. the notion of enmity, 9. the notion of abandonment, 10. the notion of detachment, and 11. the notion of cessation. Thereafter there are the contemplations of nine notions: corpse turning blue and bruised is the initial contemplation, and emptiness is the last; checking the sūtra texts, this has been recorded here. Furthermore, adding the mark of disadvantage, they make twenty-one.
