Question: In the past there were immeasurable Buddhas who identically contemplated dependent origination and all attained bodhi; why does it only mention the seven Buddhas, and so forth? Answer: The treatise's doctrine now resolves this: although they were immeasurable, it is like speaking of the seven kalpas of the world as being similar—meaning seven fires pass successively, and thereafter one water [disaster], fire disaster, and so forth; therefore, following this analogy, it temporarily discusses the seven Buddhas. 'How much more so for all the inferior bodhi of others': even when the Buddha attained bodhi, it was still like [reflecting on] dependent origination so that what was not yet realized could be realized, and so forth; how much more so for the bodhi of the two vehicles?
