Regarding "all karmans, briefly speaking, are of four kinds, etc.," Master Jing says: "First, the karman of a single announcement (jñapti) has two kinds: first, one with a causal [specification], that is, when reciting the precepts, 'Let the venerable Saṅgha listen: today, the fifteenth day of the waxing moon, is the poṣadha and recitation of the precepts, etc.'; second, one without a causal [specification], such as reciting, 'Let the venerable Saṅgha listen: if the time has arrived for the Saṅgha, and the Saṅgha approves and listens, the Saṅgha appoints so-and-so as the instructor,' which is an announcement, and because it lacks the words 'waxing moon' or 'waning moon,' it is called 'without causal [specification].' Second, the announcement-with-one-action karman (jñaptidvitīya-karman): such day and time, one announcement and one karman, which is the announcement-with-one-action. Third, the announcement-with-three-actions karman (jñapticaturtha-karman), meaning the receipt of the full ordination, etc. Fourth, the three-statement karman: such as when reciting the precepts, when there are only three people and they do not recite the precepts extensively, but merely say face-to-face, 'Let the venerable Saṅgha listen: I, the monk so-and-so, am pure regarding the precepts, etc.'; speaking thus three times is called a three-statement karman. 'Karman' is that which accomplishes the matter; it is generically called karman. Another explanation says: a three-statement karman refers to a threefold statement face-to-face, as in receiving robes, etc."
