"Furthermore, there are six kinds of thorough knowledge: first, that of the contaminated truth-cognition of an unstable stage, where the exhaustion of suffering and origination in the desire realm establishes one thorough knowledge; second, that of the contaminated thorough knowledge of a stable stage, where the exhaustion of the lower defilements under suffering and origination in the upper two realms also establishes one thorough knowledge; third, that of the untainted unconditioned thorough knowledge without dispute, where the exhaustion of defilements under cessation across the three realms collectively establishes one thorough knowledge; fourth, that of the untainted conditioned truth-thorough knowledge, where the exhaustion of defilements under the path across the three realms collectively establishes one thorough knowledge; fifth, thorough knowledge of the fetters binding to the lower realms; and sixth, thorough knowledge of the fetters binding to the higher realms." It should be understood that this is stated according to conventional meaning and is not argued in terms of the actual reality. If arguing in terms of actual reality, there may be only two: namely, entering the path of seeing to realize and observe tathatā, thereby collectively severing the defilements under the four truths across the three realms to establish together one thorough knowledge; then, this person having attained the first fruition and already suppressed the cultivation-defilements of the nine stages, severs all nine grades collectively, leaping over to realize the state of an arhat, and thus a second thorough knowledge of the exhaustion of all fetters is established. Or, only four are established: namely, one is established upon entering the path of seeing as before, and in the path of cultivation, progressively severing the cultivation-defilements of the three realms establishes three thorough knowledges, which, added to the previous one, make four. If reconciling doubts and facts according to contextual meaning, then there are many: either they are stated as two, as explained before; or they are stated as three, meaning one established in the path of seeing, and two established in the path of cultivation—namely, the exhaustion of the fetters binding to the lower realms and the exhaustion of the fetters binding to the higher realms; or they are stated as four, adding the exhaustion of craving for the form realm; or they are stated as five, meaning four in the path of seeing as in the text, and one in the path of cultivation, meaning leaping over to realize the arhat; or they are stated as six, as in this text; or they are stated as seven, meaning four in the path of seeing and three in the path of cultivation; or they are stated as eight, meaning six established in the path of seeing and two established in the path of cultivation, excluding the exhaustion of craving for the form realm; or they are stated as nine, adding the exhaustion of craving for the form realm.
