Tenth, in explaining black maturation and so forth: Master Jing says: Regarding "Just as a thrown staff falls with its root into hell, its middle into the animal realm, and its tip into the ghost realm," this corresponds to a single karma traversing through various realms. Having performed black-and-white karma, just as a thrown staff, one falls either into impure places of the bad realms—namely, experiencing mixed suffering and pleasure among ghosts and animals—or into slightly pure places of the good realms—experiencing mixed suffering and pleasure among humans and devas, except for the devas of the realm of Māra. Regarding "performing white-and-white karma and being born in the five destinies, etc.," the white-and-white karma of the heavens naturally receives form and formless retributions; but because the person who created this karma dies from the upper realms and falls back into the five destinies, it is said that they are born in the five destinies. Master Da says: "The three grades of root, middle, and tip" means that having created three grades of karma, they are called born into the three bad paths. Another explanation: a single karma successively receives retribution in the three bad paths. Now the Mahāyāna holds this; this explanation agrees with Master Jing.
