Regarding '[Just as] the principle that with ignorance as condition there are volitional formations is such, the principle that with craving as condition there is clinging, and with clinging as condition there is existence, is likewise so,' Master Jing explains: Question: The principle that with ignorance as condition there are volitional formations is analogous to [the principle that] with clinging as condition there is existence, as is clear; what similarity is there to make it analogous to [the principle that] with craving as condition there is clinging? The explanation is: There is slight similarity, though not completely so. Just as preceding unwholesome ignorance generates subsequent volitional formation—that is, intention—associated with unwholesome ignorance, analogously craving generates clinging, and in this sense their meaning is the same; it is not based on ignorance generating the remaining bodily, verbal, and mental volitional formations, nor on generating meritorious or immovable volitional formations.
