Regarding 'Twenty-seventh, defiled and undefiled,' the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: Ignorance, craving, and clinging only pertain to the unwholesome and the obscured-unrecorded; these three defilements were previously called the four afflictive defilements in the fourth gateway. Now it says three because these are real whereas the previous were nominal, their meanings being distinct; among the unwholesome, it pertains to both the defiled and unobscured-unrecorded. The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: Volitional formations pertain only to wholesome and unwholesome; existence pertains to wholesome, unwholesome, and unobscured-unrecorded; in the phases of the seven branches one also gives rise to wholesome and defiled, and hence it is called pertaining to both. This is in reality unrecorded, but because it relies on the five to be born in the future, there is no fault.
