The Sanskrit word muni means silence (jāpa); here it is called serenity (śānta), because one realizes the principle of serenity. If one relies on the stage of wisdom arisen from listening below, within all noble ones, all bodily and vocal karmas and the mind within the body constitute the essence of the three pure karmas. Ji says: 'Mind' refers to mental karma, which differs from this text; there it is said that the bodily and muni karmas of a noble one encompass only taintless karma, whereas tainted karma is called the three pure karmas, without making distinctions in contrast to ordinary worldlings. Here, however, the contrast is made between ordinary worldlings and noble ones, and between non-Buddhists and those of the internal teaching; hence pure karma pertains solely to ordinary worldlings, while all three karmas within the body of a noble one are called muni karmas. Because the comparative perspectives differ, they are not mutually contradictory.
