The three characteristics are: 1. Arising from the previous limit into the middle limit; 2. Arising from the middle limit into the subsequent limit; 3. From the middle limit, either tending toward transmigration or tending toward ultimate purity. The first two are called transmigration; the latter one is cessation. The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi states: 'The ten causes and two fruits definitely do not belong to the same time period.' This treatise relies on this meaning, and therefore distinguishes dependent arising across two time periods. That text also states: 'Among the causes, the first seven and craving, grasping, and becoming may be in different or the same periods; but the groups of two, three, and seven are each definitely in the same period.' Thus it demonstrates dependent arising across the three limits. Here, it merely refutes the Hīnayāna view that dependent arising is definitely established across three periods, by demonstrating it based on two periods; it is not definitively only this, because the seven of the past, three of the present, and two of the future pertain to karma experienced in a later life, which brings about karmic maturation.
