Fifth, the gate of the four paths: Master Ji explains: "[Mental applications of] apprehending characteristics, resolute intention, and examination extend to the two paths of expedients and progressive excellence; the mental application of detachment is exclusively the uninterrupted path; the mental application of taking in delight extends to the four paths; the mental application of ultimate preparatory application extends to the uninterrupted path and the path of progressive excellence; the seventh mental application is exclusively the path of liberation. This is based on the cultivation of the four paths in the two vehicles, because all the preparatory application, uninterrupted path, etc., of a subsequent grade are the path of progressive excellence of the preceding grade. For bodhisattvas it is not so, since moment by moment they may possess all four; this should be understood by analogy. Now, based on detaching from the various stages, because apprehending characteristics and resolute intention induce the uninterrupted [path], they extend to progressive excellence; the mental application of examination also extends to preparatory application; the uninterrupted path of a subsequent grade is the progressive excellence of the preceding grade, and hence it is said that the sixth also extends to progressive excellence. The actual meaning based generally on the nine stages and the seven gates of mental application is like this."
