4.122

六十二說：了相、勝解、加行道攝遠離及加行究竟作意無間道，攝攝樂作意四種道攝，觀察作意勝進道攝者，此依初離欲染別離上染加行道說，依容預勝進，不說後品無間是前勝進道故，加行究竟作意唯無間，觀察作意依斷中品進修道說唯勝進道，不說已後為加行道，亦不相違，第七作意為解脫道義准可知，故論不說。

Fascicle 62 states: "[The mental applications of] apprehending characteristics and resolute intention are subsumed under the path of preparatory application; detachment and ultimate preparatory application are subsumed under the uninterrupted path; taking in delight is subsumed under the four paths; and examination is subsumed under the path of progressive excellence." This is stated based on the path of preparatory application for the initial detachment from the defilements of desire and the separate detachment from higher defilements, relying on gradual progressive excellence and not saying that the uninterrupted path of a subsequent grade is the path of progressive excellence of the preceding one. Therefore, ultimate preparatory application is exclusively the uninterrupted path, and examination is said to be exclusively the path of progressive excellence based on the path of progressive cultivation that severs medium grades, without calling what comes after it the path of preparatory application; thus there is no contradiction. That the seventh mental application is the path of liberation can be known by inference, and so the treatise does not mention it.
