明七作意相已，當隨文辨，了相攝緣法緣義者，基云：此有二釋：一云，了相通聞修慧，故攝二種；一云，了相唯修慧，此說初起修亦緣於法故說攝二。

Having explained the characteristics of the seven mental applications, they will now be clarified according to the text. Regarding 'discerning characteristics subsumes focusing on dharmas and focusing on meaning', Master Ji says: 'There are two explanations here: One says: Discerning characteristics extends to wisdom arisen from listening and from cultivation, and therefore subsumes both kinds. The other says: Discerning characteristics is solely wisdom arisen from cultivation; this states that initial engagement in cultivation also focuses on dharmas, hence it is said to subsume both.'
