Since the text explains the seven mental applications in terms of the concentrated stage, namely from the first dhyāna up to neither-perception-nor-non-perception, what need is there to separately exclude focusing on dharmas and focusing on meaning in the desire realm? Hence it does not say 'subsumes a portion', and so on. As for saying that 'discerning characteristics is mixed with listening and contemplation', this means it is interspersed with the listening and contemplation of the desire realm, because the unarrived concentration (anāgamya-samādhi) is adjacent to the desire realm, and whether emerging or entering, it is mixed with listening; from this stage upward, one transcends listening and contemplation and has exclusively the characteristics of cultivation.
