Master Ji says: The initial approach is based on the accomplishments of cultivating conditioned fruitions, and therefore it applies across what the seven include; according to the second approach, it is included only in the culmination of practice, which means that the preceding second [mental application], taking a purified object as an object, exists solely in the Buddha-fruition, because the unconditioned āśrayaparavṛtti has been completely accomplished. As for "the initial mental application of resolute investigation is included by none of them; if śamatha is the precursor, it is included across all": earlier it said that with the mental application of resolute investigation, either one initially investigates phenomena, or śamatha is the precursor. The initial mental application of resolute investigation is simply the wholesome wisdom arisen from reflection in the desire realm, and therefore it is not included in the seven mental applications of the form realm; if, based on śamatha in the form realm, one performs that mental application of resolute investigation, then it is included in the seven mental applications. The preceding text also said: "The mental application of pacification means that by this, either one initially settles the mind internally, or vipaśyanā is the precursor." Now it says: "Whether it is initial pacification, or vipaśyanā is the precursor, it should be understood that this is also the case." This refers to what was said earlier: "either one initially settles the mind internally." If at first one settles on an internal object based on a mind of the desire realm, this is called the mental application of pacification and is not included in the seven mental applications; if, based on vipaśyanā of wisdom arisen from cultivation, one arouses the mental application of pacification, it is said to be included in the seven mental applications.
