As for "the mental applications operating with interruption and operating with effort are included up to the mental application of delight": Jing says: Operating with interruption and operating with effort—these two mental applications include only the first four among the seven, namely apprehension of marks, resolute engagement, aloofness, and delight; hence it says, "included up to the mental application of delight." Master Ji says: Regarding mental application with interruption, Fascicle 28 says it is included in apprehension of marks, because it is interrupted by hearing and reflection. Regarding mental application with effort, Fascicle 28 says it is included in the next five, because all arouse effort; here, because the mental application of delight applies to the superior path of progress, it is omitted and not mentioned, since examination and progress are the same. Because the mental application of culmination of preliminary practice is capable of attaining spontaneous operation, it is called spontaneous operation, not that it is already capable of spontaneous operation at that time. Fascicle 28 says: Only the culmination of practice is called effortless operation; in Fascicle 28, "with effort" is named "without interruption" in contrast to the preceding "with interruption," while "spontaneous operation" is named "effortless" in contrast to the preceding "forceful and with effort."
