What is the characteristic of emerging from meditative concentration? It refers to "not subsumed under the intrinsic nature of conceptual discrimination, the characteristics of an unstable stage." Ji says: Although the intrinsic nature of concentrated and distracted minds both includes conceptual discrimination, the nature of this distracted mind is not subsumed by meditative concentration and belongs to the characteristics of an unstable stage, and is therefore called the characteristic of emerging from concentration; or else, the intrinsic nature of conceptual discrimination is taintless concentration, and what is not subsumed by it is the characteristic of an unstable stage, called the characteristic of emerging from concentration. Now it is further explained: the distracted mind is called "conceptual discrimination"; because its nature is not subsumed by concentration, it is called "the characteristic of an unstable stage."
