Second, explaining their distinct names: 'Emptiness' means that the self-nature of persons and dharmas is nonexistent. 'Wishless' means having no longing or seeking. 'Signless': The first fascicle of the Buddhabhūmiśāstra states: 'Departing from ten signs: visible forms, sounds, scents, tastes, tangible objects, male, female, birth, aging, and death.' The thirteenth fascicle of the Mahāparinirvāṇasūtra states thirteen signs, adding to these the three signs of suffering, pleasure, and equanimity. The meaning of samādhi is as explained before. 'Liberation' means the departure from bondage; or because, by taking these as objects, one departs from the bondage of the truths; or because, by giving rise to these, one realizes unconditioned liberation. Based on these two meanings, the gates to liberation are named 'gates of liberation'; or their essence is taintless liberation itself as the gate.
