The text on the difficulties of concentration states: "Question: Difficulties to what are these? Answer: To the marks of samādhi, and so forth": this means they are difficulties to both the cognitive object of concentration and the marks of its causes and conditions. Blue and so forth transformed by concentration, as the marks of the objective sphere, in turn generate concentration. As for the marks of causes and conditions, as the later fascicle says, they refer to the requisites of concentration. Regarding the eleven difficulties, Jing says: Although the sūtra fully clarifies them, this treatise contains only eight: namely, here from the very beginning up to 'and likewise' is one difficulty; from 'due to not properly guarding the sense doors and so forth' to 'the quail' is the second; 'merely reflecting and seeking' up to 'abruptly arising while revolving' is the third; 'when one is walking' up to 'posing a difficulty to concentration' is the fourth; or arising conceit based on concentration is the fifth; or engaging in much talk is the sixth; or prolonged investigation is the seventh; or, because marks such as light arise based on concentration, immediately abandoning inner cultivation and directly manifesting outer forms is this eighth difficulty.
