Regarding the eighth, the samādhi of the five noble factors: according to the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra, it says: The sūtra speaks of the noble five-factored samādhi, namely, joy, bliss, pure mind, the sign of illumination, and the sign of contemplation. Joy and bliss, because the marks of joy are the same in the first dhyāna and the second dhyāna, are called one factor; the third dhyāna, through freedom from joy, bliss is separately a single factor; in the fourth dhyāna, the pure mind is the third factor. Dependent on these three factors, one can produce the sign of illumination and the sign of contemplation. As the sign of illumination serves as a cause for the sign of contemplation, it can break and tear apart the five aggregates, contemplating the five aggregates as empty; therefore it is called the sign of contemplation. Because it can effect nirvāṇa, it is called noble.
