Ji says: In the doctrine, the single phrase 'joy and bliss born of seclusion' differs among the various dhyānas, but the rest may be universally possessed; 'joy and bliss born of concentration,' 'already free from joy and bliss,' and 'pure dhyāna' are the distinctive natures of the four dhyānas. As previously explained, because the remaining five phrases can be universally possessed, for this reason there is no further doctrinal explanation in the subsequent factors, but only the explanations of similes differ. As for 'like a clever bath attendant or their apprentice, etc.': in the Western regions, bathing involves a master bath attendant and apprentices, and hence it is used as a simile. The bronze vessel or clam-shell vessel is a simile for generating joy and bliss through freedom from desire. As for 'instruction and admonition': when bathing, bronze vessels and the like are used to hold ashes, cleansing pea-powder, and fine bathing powder; now verbal teaching is like that vessel, and what the teaching expresses can accord with those wholesome and pure practices of renouncing investigation and the like, like that fine powder of ashes and peas—this is precisely the path of uninterrupted practice; washing and drenching with water is the path of liberation, because it purifies through investigation. As for 'bath ball': in the Western regions, after bathing, amalaka fruit is chopped, dried in the sun, and made into powder, mixed with fragrant raw sesame oil to make it moist and neither hard nor soft, and only then smeared on the body, taking its fragrance, cleanliness, smoothness, and radiance; the bath ball is this dried amalaka powder. This is a simile for the practitioner, who, prior to attaining concentration, must eliminate coarseness and heaviness; 'holding moisture and lubricity' is a simile for the blending of joy; fragrant sesame means that after attaining concentration, joy moistens the body just as when blended with oil.
