4.39

歡者：謂從本來清淨行者觀資糧地所修淨行等者，此中意說，加行道位方修等引故，住資糧方修淨行持戒清淨生無悔等，於修定時前遠方便要先戒淨名資糧地，非要入位方修等引。

'Gladness: namely, one whose practice has been pure from the beginning contemplates the pure practices cultivated on the stage of equipment...': the intention here is to say that only in the stage of the path of preparation does one cultivate equipoise; hence, abiding in the equipment, one cultivates pure practices and purity of keeping precepts, giving rise to non-regret and so forth. At the time of cultivating concentration, the prior, distant means necessarily requires purity of precepts first, which is called the stage of equipment; it is not that one must enter the stage [of seeing] before cultivating equipoise.
