4.40

釋前後妨難中，有三經不同：一、先說三摩地，後說解脫；二、前說解脫，後三摩地；三、說二俱時。上來所引離五惡法，先說解脫修習五法，後說三摩地，當第二經，既此相違，故今解釋。

In resolving the difficulty concerning sequence, there are three differing sūtras: 1. first speaking of samādhi, and afterwards speaking of liberation; 2. previously speaking of liberation, and afterwards of samādhi; 3. speaking of the two as simultaneous. That which was cited above on separating from the five evil phenomena—first speaking of liberation and the cultivation of the five phenomena, and afterwards speaking of samādhi—corresponds to the second sūtra. Since these are in conflict, it is now explained.
