Third, in discerning the attainment of non-conception, regarding 'in this life, both entering and emerging': entering is without mind, emerging is with mind; this describes the concentration, whereas below it describes the fruit. Regarding 'if born there, one only enters and does not emerge': the seventh fascicle of the Vijñaptimātratā[-siddhi] presents two brief interpretations: First, at the initial moment of rebirth in the mindless [state], there is not yet mind in the intermediate existence, hence it says 'only enters'; the second says that at the initial moment of rebirth there is mind, and later one abides without mind, hence it is named 'entering'—otherwise, if at the initial rebirth mind has never arisen, how could it be called 'entering'? Only having [mind] first and then lacking it can be called 'entering'.
