Some say: Conjunction with the mind emerging from the concentration of cessation has the three contacts of emptiness, wishlessness, and signlessness, which respectively touch the three contacts when emerging from the concentration of cessation. Other masters say: The contact conjoined with the mind of the station of consciousness and the station of space is called immovable contact, because these two purely form aspects of consciousness and space; the contact conjoined with the mind of the station of nothingness is called nothingness contact, because of the absence of previous existence; the contact conjoined with neither conception nor non-conception is called signless contact, because the signs of conception and non-conception are indistinct. Precisely because of this, it speaks of the four formless [attainments]: if a mind with conception emerges from the concentration of cessation, it is open to being tainted or taintless; when emerging from the concentration of cessation, one either enters the various attainments in reverse order or enters the various attainments skipping in reverse, because the mind emerging from the concentration of cessation is capable of becoming present.
