Regarding "three roots", Jing says: The three of greed, hatred, and delusion can produce the gates of the ten courses of action. Ji says: This means that the ten actions take greed, hatred, and wrong view as their preliminary application, and bring them to culmination as appropriate; or this specifically clarifies the three mental courses of action. Bei says: Question: The course of action of wrong view is not an unwholesome root; why does it belong to the three roots? There are three explanations: First, although wrong view is not a root, it is called a root by following the majority; second, because wrong view arises together with the root of delusion, it is called a root by association; third, the third root is simply ignorance; because the ten actions are brought to culmination through greed, hatred, and delusion, they are established as roots, without subsuming the ten actions directly as the three roots.
