As for the 'four protections', Master Tai says: According to Jinaputra's Commentary, being free from imbalance is called protection of life; knowing the measure in food and drink is called protection of strength; the two powers of reflective discernment and cultivation are protection against afflictions; and the non-conceptual wisdom properly freed from preliminary application is the right expedient. Master Ji explains: 1. Protection of life means guarding and upholding the true Dharma without begrudging bodily life, or protecting others' life-faculty without damaging it, or protecting one's own right livelihood so as not to give rise to evil karma. 2. Protection of strength means protecting wisdom to crush the hosts of Māra's adversaries, or protecting physical strength to benefit others, or protecting the five powers to crush adversaries without yielding. Protection against mental afflictions means guarding against various afflictions so they do not defile the mind, or giving rise to afflictions to protect the true Dharma by expelling evil persons who destroy the true Dharma. Protection by right expedients means practicing and cultivating the true Dharma through skillful means.
